Few sports place greater physical challenges than boxing. To be successful fighters must have a very low body fat typically around 7%, but still be strong, powerful and agile enough to deliver scoring punches; or even a knockout blow. The principle of maintaining strength, power and muscle mass while losing body fat is useful for most sports. Dr Rob Child was a consultant to Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) and then the Amateur Boxing Executive (ABE). He helped in teams prepare by providing personalised nutrition and sports medicine services prior to the 2000 Olympics, where they achieved gold. The fast and effective weight management strategies developed by the Elite Sport Group have also been used to reduce body fat in many other sports including distance runners, cyclists and triathletes.
