The Elite Sports Group have performed nutrition and physiology research with leading Formula One drivers, including World Champions. One example was a head cooling system developed by McLaren F1 to reduce the risk of its drivers suffering hyperthermia during Grand Prix races. To evaluate the effectiveness of the cooling system McLaren chose an external research team, which included Dr Rob Child of the Elite Sports Group (ESG). Detailed investigations were performed in the laboratory involving thermal measurements during simulated Grand Prix driving conditions. This showed that the head cooling system developed by McLaren F1 engineers reduced the thermal load under race conditions; helping to maintain a stable body temperature in races.
